Lately more and more athletes have been attracted by the world of yoga, starting to introduce this discipline into their normal routine. Among them there are a lot of runners that have realized how perfect the combination yoga-running is.
Why is that, you might ask! There is not a secret recipe or a revealing answer: everyone can benefit from yoga, so can runners! Yoga helps keeping the body healthy and strong, and for sure any athletes, runners included, could use a body in its best shape. The main ingredients to be the best version of ourselves are a healthy body and a calm mind. Yoga is an holistic practice, it works the entire body harmoniously, making it stronger and more flexible at the same time. In this way the muscles are stimulated while being stretched , growing in the safest way possible, without experiencing any trauma.
But please watch out! Yoga is not stretching! Adding one or two yoga poses before or after a run will not improve your performance or prevent you from getting injured. A fundamental factor in Yoga is the coordination between the asana (yoga poses) and the breath. During the yoga practice it is important to know exactly when to inhale and when to exhale and to know how to use the breath to enter or exit a pose. In this way we are able to warm up our body from the inside, to release tension and stretch the muscles in the safest way, working our body and mind in harmony. At the beginning this process can be quite difficult and confusing. The best and safest way to begin your yoga journey is to rely on a yoga teacher, who will help and assist you.
Learning to be aware of your breath will not just help you during the yoga practice, but will also teach you to “breath well” and to use all your lung capacity. And let’s be honest, everyone could use some extra space in those lungs during a run!!!
Moreover, yoga works not only on the strength and flexibility of muscles, but it works also on joints mobility. Healthy joints are the key to avoid injuries during a run, to move better and to feel more comfortable in our own body.
