Since we have been around on social media and we have started our path as yogis and teachers this is the question we have been asked the most: how do I start? How can I commit to a consistent yoga practice?
There is not such a thing as a perfect recipe or something that works perfectly for everyone, but talking from our experience we can try our best to give you some advices! The most important thing, above all at the beginning, is your motivation: why are you starting a yoga journey?
As for everything, to be consistent and to have real benefits and results from a practice you need to start because you want to and for yourself! We don’t mean that your motivation has to be something big like “I wanna live 100 years” or “I want to reach nirvana” or whatever. Your motivation has to be important for you, whatever it is! Of course with time and practice it might change, and it probably will, but at the beginning, whatever brings you to show up on your mat, works!
Another very important point is: find your yoga style! All too often we’ve been told: “Yoga? no! That’s not for me! I can’t sit for 1 hour and a half breathing and doing all the nothing, I’m too stressed to do so, I need the sweat!” (Clearly, they have never been to a Vinyasa class!) or “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga” and so far and so on.. What we are trying to point here is that there are so many kind of Yoga out there that we can’t judge from what we have heard, or from that time our friend dragged us into a yoga class back in 1998! So our second advice here is: get out there and try! Try everything you can, be open minded and find your yoga style/styles: you can find one or hundreds, you can stick to one style for your entire life, or you can change it as your needs change.. but start looking and you’ll fall in love during the search!
But now, let’s get to the real point! How do you actually start your yoga journey? There are many effective ways, and you need to try (again) to find what works best for you!
The web offers you many option! We live in such a lucky era!
- Yoga classes
- Yoga videos and apps
- Blogs and IG yogis
We have tried all of them, and they all work! It depends on you, your time and your economic possibilities! But remember that the only essential thing to practice yoga is you!
If you have never practiced yoga, we recommend you to take at least a couple of classes with a teacher (or more than ones, to try different styles): go to a real yoga studio, breathe the air, feel the vibes and the energy of the environment, and try to understand how a yoga class is structured, what is a yoga class.
When we first started yoga, it used to be a sort of “ok, I saw this pic on Instagram, I’m gonna keep bending until I’ll get there”, which is not exactly a healthy or effective approach! We both were able to start appreciating yoga and its benefits after we had been to class.
This doesn’t mean you can’t be a self-taught yogi, just that at the beginning you need some sort of guidance to get started and to get the most out of it (and to learn how to not get injured) J We all will always be students, and that is the best part, because you are never done learning, how exciting!!
With all that being said, let’s go back to the world of medias and the internet never ending material! Once you have been to your yoga classes, you know what is yoga, and how a practice is done, starting your own yoga practice will get one thousand times easier!
First option: youtube videos and apps.
There are very valid apps where you can buy bundles of yoga classes and follow real qualified teachers and get in your own space and time the experience of a real class.
There are many options, for example:
- CodyApp is an app /website where you can find classes, programs or bundles of every style of yoga, for every need or goal you have. Some examples are “Love and All is coming” by Talia Sutra, or “Strength & Elevation Flows” by Patrick Beach etc.
- Omstarsofficial, the new NetFlix for yogis by Kino McGregor and Kerry Verna. An online TV channel were you can #livetheyogilife and find classes, programs, tutorials, healthy recipes, meditation classes etc.
- Youtube channels and videos.
Second option: ebooks.
There are many valid yoga guides and ebooks out there (and many to come 😉), generic or targeting specific goals, and they work pretty well, if you are able to stick to your plan and to organise your own yoga time and practice this is the perfect way to do it.
And last but not least blogs and IG yoga pages. You can find billions of ideas, inspiration, videos, tutorials on those channels, you can find real people you can ask questions to and that will answer to you. You might find friends to share this journey with and to keep you motivated, you can find a real, live, breathing, encouraging amazing community.
Of course you are always welcome to visit our website and consult our tutorials, videos and all the news that will come soon (we will have exciting news YEAH), as well as our Instagram pages (and hashtags #yogawithmarti & #MartinaFixTheAsana) where we try as much as we can to answer to all your requests and be as helpful as we can to help you to get started on your yoga journey or to bring it on a new level!
